"Giving you a wider range of things to manipulate, but with more precise manipulation..."

Reluctantly, Nita nods. "I like it." Possibly in spite of herself.

She hefts the bottle, avoiding sealing it for the moment.

"But it'd take me a lot more energy to get the same result, both levitating the bottle and maneuvering the water separately."

"If I may flatter myself, I'm reasonably powerful and practiced." Morgan drops back down -- not into his chair again, but on the opposite side of the couch from her, with a grin. "But there are plenty of things I can't do. Affecting actual physical matter directly instead of through physical forces, garbage, for example. Terrible with the spirit world."

"So you need a conduit," Nita concludes, setting the bottle down on a side table before continuing.

"And... communication with the inanimate?"

Not that that was Nita's best subject either, but still.

"That's out of my paradigm. I wouldn't even know where to begin."

Spirit? Mind? Matter? Time? Maybe he could think of a few ways, but all of them were foreign to his way of thinking, something he'd have to unpleasantly wrestle his mind into believing.

Nita fights the urge to be smug.

"So it's about personal background as well, then. We have that in common, a little."

What with her initial 'growing things' specialty and all...

"... Ever been out of your home dimension? Willing or unwilling."

"It's about paradigm. I'm a martial artist, an Akashic to name our Tradition. The Order of Hermes is all about 'classic' magic, spells and invocations, alchemy, demon-summoning circles... The Virtual Adepts see reality as a program they can hack, the Dreamspeakers commune with the spirits in all things... Background has an influence of course, but it's what you believe."

He remains very matter-of-fact about this all, relaxed lazily into the couch cushions.

"I actually moved off-world a while ago. Found a place that I liked better and was more comfortable in. So yes, you bet. Ever met an alternate version of yourself?"

"And they're all Akashics? Or Akashics are with the Order of Hermes specifically?"

She could sort of see parallels with wizardry in all of them, but none were an exact match (unsurprisingly so at this point), and she could definitely appreciate the compare-and-contrast inherent in them.

"And no, actually. I know they exist, but I've never met them."

Kit may have had more to say on it, courtesy of Ponch, but he wasn't here today, and no dogs had seen fit to give her a surprise visit either.

"You have, though, then?"

"Akashics are one of the nine Traditions, as are the Hermetics, the Adepts, and so on," Morgan said, picking the answer he'd prefer to discuss. "Styles of magick that are both large enough to have significant representation in Awakened circles, and are uneasily allied because they're inherently opposed to and basically at war with the Technocracy that wants to extinguish said magick."

Ending the explanation with that made Nita sit up straight, almost giving herself whiplash.

"In my experience, extinguishing magic - or magick," she said, making sure she pronounced it right, "is usually a bad thing. What in the worlds is their deal?"

... If this was, in fact, a recruitment pitch, then Morgan had his hook.

If it wasn't, though, he was going to have to work double-time to put her off the scent.

"Depends on who you ask. A world with magick is one that's far less safe, you know. Not just for the Mages, but for all the other creatures in it. The average person has no defense against any of that. So from one point of view, they choose that safety over the wild and dangerous freedom."

Then Morgan smirked. "Or alternatively, a world without anything they don't approve of is one they control."

Nita was quiet, for a moment, analyzing both sides as Morgan presented them...

Then grinned. "I can see why it'd be better to oppose such a group. Kind of like dealing with people who approve of censorship."

Even if it wasn't made to be part of an agenda, it was still a starkly slippery slope.

Morgan nodded.

"Actually..."

And here her expression turned a bit more grim.

"Do they know wizardry exists? Separately, I mean?"

While being mistaken for something else could get annoying, it could also present an advantage in certain circumstances...

"Not all of them, probably not even most. As you get into more senior levels, then they start classifying us as 'reality deviants'." Morgan makes a face at the term. "Though they often lump other supernatural creatures under that too."

Nita matched him, a disgusted look on her own face.

"Is it a small group of people who started it? Or is this more of a widespread movement?"

That cracks a wry smile out of Morgan. "Oh, it was a movement that grew. You might have heard about the public results, something called the Renaissance and the scientific revolution? Nowadays, take all your conspiracy theories about puppetmasters behind the scenes and assume they're not only all true, but carry with them the amount of people it would actually take to get that done."

"Is this in one universe, or all of them?"

Such was the distinction of learning how wizardry and science could coexist; she wasn't willing to accept that this was the universe where they weren't friends.

At least on Earth.

"Infinite universes by definition, since infinite universes exist! But probably not all of them."

The stupidity of the concept of infinity makes Morgan giggle. He has a Scientist for a best friend, okay? He picks up on the occasional nerd thing.

That remark gets a quirk of the lips from Nita.

"Word is that there is an upper limit... it's just a really large limit."

Buuuuut 'functionally infinite' was inherently sillier as a concept.

"So it's something that can be outdone, within Time, instead of something externally imposed."

"Maybe. It's possible things are so very stagnated that no one can win. But I choose to not believe that, because it doesn't matter."

Enter fights that need to be fought. It's a solid principle, and one he tries to follow. But no one who could just give up would have Magick in the first place -- by definition!

"You've come to the right place, if you're looking for people used to fighting when the odds are against them."

When your enemy was entropy, that was the definition of a losing battle... but it still mattered.

"Did you come here to give me that pitch? Be honest," she says, not that she probably needs to specify.

Probably.

[morganknight]

"Not at all. I mean, the pitch literally gives itself. 'A group of people want to stamp out what you stand for. Wat do?". I just came to get the measure of you as a person, in general."

Then his smile twisted sly.

"The secret, selfish hidden motivation you're looking for is just that I volunteered personally because I heard you were cute and smart."

Rest assured, no canonmates are crashing this thread - unless you think it would be funny. ;)

"Or what you are," Nita notes, more quietly, nodding.

Then she snorted again.

"Oh, geeze; I'm pretty sure you're too old for me."

She paused.

"... Right?"

She'd never actually asked him his age...

"Late 22. You tell me. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't gone out with older women..."

Morgan's grin just grew broader, hinting at a thing or three he wasn't fully getting into right now.

Despite their previous conversation, in reaction to this she looked decidedly unimpressed.

"... I'm not even 17."

Even Ronan, tall and broody as he was, hadn't been more than a year older than her when they'd kissed, and the tale between them and Kit was... unique, to use a singular word.

"Kind of looking in the wrong numerical direction, there."
