Jane, if asked, would honestly say that she was only eighty percent sure of what she was doing. When it came to anything theoretical, the math could be absolutely solid, but when it left the paper and attempted to be applied practically … That was where things could get dicey.

This latest project was not dicey, though.

Somehow, for some reason, there were no errors. There were no problems. No power surges, no seismic activity, not even a horrible entity coming out of the other side of the machine and destroying their half of the universe. Nothing that should have gone wrong!

“Isn’t that, like, a good thing?” Darcy asked.

“There’s always a margin for error! There’s no such thing as perfection when it comes to technology, let alone something like this! Even electronics get whiskering!”

“Yeah, Tony told me to tell you that he’s still working on that.”

Jane rolled her eyes. That was the least of her problems.

“Test three hundred eighty-two …”

She pulled a switch, and as expected, another wormhole opened up perfectly, showing the relatively safe space that was somewhere near Saturn’s rings. All readings normal, even the extremely delicate machines meant to detect all the kinds of anomalies that she could not predict for (thanks again, Bruce and Tony). This was driving her mad, because something should be going wrong. Be weird, strange. Not exactly like the math. It was too perfect and in her experience, that was always worse than something going wrong.

Jane wasn't the only one whose sense of Wrong was tingling. So were those of a team of wizards, hand-picked by a Galactic-level Senior, on the hunt for a set of illegally-distributed worldgating matrices. Thought to (read: reported directly from the Stationmaster of the Crossings Intercontinual Gating Complex) have been scuttled during a run-of-the-mill complex-wide inspection, the matrices could be in any dimension, on any planet, in anyone's hands.

Thank goodness the actual list of those spreading the technology about was short; many of those who had found themselves with a way to manufacture worldgates were not criminals in and of themselves, and that meant the job of Nita Callahan was solely to track it down, put out a multiversal marker signal for the follow-up workers from the Crossings, and to stop any further creation of worldgates.

In other words, she was just in time.

"That should be my cue," came a voice, sounding younger than Jane and Darcy both, as a young woman seemingly faded into view.

Or perhaps just notice.

"And yeah, there is a problem with stacking all those end coordinates like that."

The young woman - light brown hair, grey eyes, in plain clothing with her hair tied back into a ponytail, a hefty-looking book at her side.

"I'm not here to get into that part of the nitty-gritty, though; I'm not actually a worldgating expert, I'm just helping them out today. What are your readings telling you?"

The question was the first that Nita allowed herself to speak, as she better took in the room the scientists had set up - as well as the various views of Saturn she was getting.

It didn't look like a cascade was about to happen, or that anything other than light was currently being transmitted, but under these circumstances the threat was definitely a real one.

Morgan lay sprawled out on the couch, hands folded behind his head and utterly comfortable. When the Order of Hermes had asked for a much-underserved favor, that being to get to know this wizard who wasn't quite their style... they probably hadn't had this in mind.

But maybe they shouldn't have asked him them. He certainly seemed to be having fun, to judge by his grin as he watched Nita for her answer.

Nita fell just short of rolling her eyes, or putting her head in her hands.

She knew that, whatever this was leading to, it was important.

But did he have to be so... so... excruciating about it?

"One, officially. Don't know what standards people are going by elsewhere, but as far as I'm concerned there's just the one... let's say 'declared' relationship."

She let herself look over more directly at Morgan after answering. "Does this mean I can ask you one, now, or is this meant to be more of a one-sided interview?"

For the first time since the family tragedy, Jane attempts to attend something with... lots of people. It's nerve-wracking, really, even if a carnival is hardly anything like a full-scale summer concert festival. But with Walter accompanying her, she hopes it wouldn't end in the same way it did the last time. No deaths, just clean fun.

She tucks her hands into the pockets of her shorts and looks up at the ferris wheel.

"Afraid of heights?"

Walter makes sure to keep close; whichever hand Jane favors, Walter will walk on its opposite, covering blind spots.

It doesn't hurt that, if he has to, he can call up security footage from all over the area. Being willing to do emergency back-up work for the IT support here truly opens doors.

And he does have his own reasons to mind crowds, and big events... but not necessarily Ferris Wheels.

"So long as I have something solid underneath me, no," he replies, following her gaze easily. He doesn't gaze up for long, however, his eyes shifting back closer to ground level to look at the line.

"Just warn me if you're going to do something risky like, oh, balance on the restraining bar."

Said dryly, drolly - he doesn't expect her to do such a thing. If anything, he's hoping she'll laugh, find it genuinely funny.

It's not hidden in Houtaro's backpack - instead, it hid as a card, in his pocket. For once.

It wanted to try sampling other foods! And if it stays in card form most of the time, it has a higher chance of getting away with it, instead of risking mass panic.

But then, this is a Denny's. If it's not actually in the kitchen, would people even panic?

So, having made its curiosity-driven escape some half-hour ago, it had placed itself on the ground, waiting to see who would drop food. Poor Houtaro was outside, scanning the ground because he could swear he had the wily little critter tucked safely in a pocket when he'd stopped by the restaurant for a snack!

The staff, meanwhile, have absolutely no idea of a certain grasshopper's schemes. They look decently nonchalant at how the day is going, if not necessarily brightly cheerful. No one is in a hurry to make Rinne order; she'll have to wave someone down if she wants more than a drink.]

Sequel To Nightmare Meme

[During it's sleep, Hopper1 finds itself in a dream where it is out in the open in a public square. There's multiple people around minding their business and lots of chatter. They don't really react to the chemy just standing there, and continue to go about living about their lives.

Normally this sort of dream would be nice. Everyone looks to be having a good time after all! But something feels... off. Very off. It doesn't know what exactly it is per say, but the chemy doesn't have a good feeling about this.

That's when it notices Geryon suddenly behind him. Cube in hand, and a smirk across his face.

That's when it realizes isn't a dream. Its another horrible, horrible nightmare. And this time its taken a completely different shape to the one before. The people don't react to Geryon's presence. They continue to go about their lives as if nothing is wrong. Even if things are about to go horribly south.]
